The Sheet Metal Institute (SMI) is thrilled to announce Will Thompson’s recent promotion to Executive Administrator of Training. With nearly three decades in the sheet metal industry and a proven commitment to nurturing the next generation of skilled professionals, Will is poised to make a powerful impact in his new leadership role.

Will’s journey in sheet metal began back in 1994, a decision that would set the stage for a lifelong career filled with both challenges and rewarding growth. Over the years, Will gained hands-on experience in a variety of roles, from journeyman to General Foreman. His extensive field experience has given him a deep understanding of the trade and invaluable insight into the skills and dedication needed for success. When he transitioned into teaching at SMI two and a half years ago, it was a natural fit. Will found immense fulfillment in helping students succeed, making the classroom feel as rewarding as the field.

As Executive Administrator of Training, Will will be responsible for leading SMI’s apprenticeship programs and overseeing the development of training initiatives that meet the evolving needs of the industry. His vision is clear: to help shape the future of the trade by providing apprentices with top-quality education and the practical skills they need to thrive. “I am excited about my new role at the Sheet Metal Institute, where I intend to lead and contribute to the Institute’s growth and help shape the future of our trade,” says Will Thompson.

Chris Schneider, Executive Director of SMACNA Oregon & SW Washington, is confident that Will is the right person for this vital position. “The Sheet Metal Institute JATC is pleased to welcome Will Thompson as the Sheet Metal Institute’s Executive Administrator of Training. Will has decades of experience in the sheet metal trade and a demonstrated commitment to training and developing sheet metal workers. Will has the skills, experience, and vision to lead our apprenticeship far into the future,” said Schneider.

Will’s appointment marks an exciting chapter for SMI as the organization looks to expand and evolve to meet the needs of a new generation of tradespeople. His dedication, expertise, and forward-thinking approach make him uniquely qualified to lead the way.
