Thank you for your interest in the Sheet Metal Institute Apprenticeship Training Program! Below, you’ll find the steps to apply. Before you proceed with our process, please make sure you meet the minimum qualifications:
At least 18 years of age
High school graduate or GED
Completed testing and placed at required level

Physically capable of performing the work
Our application process utilizes a point system to determine entry into our program. Points are earned from testing and interview scores, as well as additional training, experience, or credentials. Details and point values are available here. Following the interview, you’ll join a ranked pool of candidates, from which apprentices are accepted based on current rankings. Individuals who thrive in our program have a basic understanding of our trade, a strong work ethic, an excellent attitude, and possess an unwavering commitment to succeed. Gather Documents
Final high school transcript or GED
Photo ID (preferably Driver’s License)
Completed Placement Test documentation
Additional documents (not required but helpful)
College transcripts
Private class transcripts
Certifications/specialized training
Resume
Letter(s) of recommendations
Step 2
UPLOAD YOUR DOCUMENTS
All documents must be submitted simultaneously. Ensure that Step 1 is complete before you begin uploading your documents.
Applicants who have met the minimum qualifications will be contacted and scheduled for an interview with a subcommittee of the JATC.
Step 5
RANKING and ACCEPTANCE
Following your interview, you will be placed in our ranked Pool of Eligibles. Your ranking is based on interview score and documentation score. You will be able to access your ranking information the month following your interview. If accepted into the apprenticeship, you will be notified via phone and email.
