Understanding the Apprenticeship Application Process

Interested applicants need to have a good understanding of the application process. Successful entry into one of our programs depends greatly on your overall score. Please check out the links on the right side of this page, including our FAQs. And, feel free to call us with any other questions.
AGE: All applicants must submit photo identification verifying they meet the minimum age of 18.

EDUCATION: All applicants must submit a transcript showing their graduation from high school or GED.

TESTING: All applicants must submit a WorkKeys NCRC certificate (Silver Level minimum) and test scores, or ACCUPLACER scores and placement results (Math 60 and Writing 101 minimums). WorkKeys tests are available at WorkSource Career Centers (Employment Offices), colleges and high schools. ACCUPLACER tests are available through Mt. Hood Community College and other colleges. Tests results more than 2 years old are not admissible.

Failure to submit the above required documents will stop you from proceeding to the next step in the application process.

PHYSICAL: All applicants must read the Essential Functions Job Analysis’ form.

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS (NOT REQUIRED): You can also submit additional documents that may improve your score. Click on the link to see a list of these optional documents and their point values.

ONLINE APPLICATION: After submitting your documents, you will be directed to fill out the online application. Before you begin, you will want to gather your work history information (including contact information).

INTERVIEW: After your application has been processed to verify you have met the minimum qualifications, you will be scheduled for an interview. Your interview score will be based on the following: Attitude, Interest, Potential, Applicable Work Experience, Work Stability and Education.

POOL(S) OF ELIGIBLES: After the interview, you will be placed on a ranked pool of eligibles. Ranking is based on your combined Interview and Documentation scores. Applicants are accepted into the apprenticeship program on a continual basis, according to their current ranking.

DRUG SCREENING: All applicants accepted into the program are required to pass a pre-employment drug test with negative test results. Applicants that fail to produce a negative drug test result will be removed from the ranked pool of eligibles upon proper notification and must wait a minimum of 6 months before submitting another application.

WOMEN AND MINORITIES: Women and Minorities are encouraged to apply. Ask us about the many success stories in our trade.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: We will not discriminate against apprenticeship applicants or apprentices based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), sexual orientation, genetic information, or because they are an individual with a disability or a person 40 years old or older. Portland Sheet Metal Worker JATC will take affirmative action to provide equal opportunity in apprenticeship and will operate the apprenticeship program as required under Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 30.
