Anita Merlo, Second Year Apprentice at the Sheet Metal Institute, Portland, Oregon, finds her calling in Sheet Metal.
Before Sheet Metal: A Struggle for Stability
Growing up in poverty, I was determined to provide a better life for my family. Like many, I believed the path to success was through college and a “good job.” So, I took out loans and pursued a degree, convinced it was the right choice. Along the way, I found meaning in community health—it felt like work that could make a lasting impact. But after graduation, I realized how underpaid that field was. With a mountain of debt and no clear path to financial stability, I felt stuck.
Discovering Sheet Metal
After struggling to find a well-paying job, I knew I had to think outside the box. As a single mom, I needed something reliable to support my family. When I first heard about the sheet metal industry, I was drawn to the pay and the opportunity for free training. But what really hooked me was the work itself. Instead of sitting behind a desk, I could be out there building things. That’s something to be proud of.
Starting the Apprenticeship
I work for McKinstry in Portland, Oregon, and I’m about to finish my second year in the apprenticeship program. If all goes well, I’ll become a journeyperson by the end of 2027. The journey so far has been challenging but rewarding.
Looking Ahead
While I’m still learning and growing as an apprentice, I also hope to advocate for more information about trades in high schools. Growing up, I had no idea trade work was even an option, and I wish I had known sooner. I want to help change that for the next generation.
Impact on My Family and Friends
Sheet Metal isn’t just a job, it’s a career that encourages growth, both personally and professionally. I’ve been able to teach my kids things I never learned, and I’m confident this will only continue. My 14-year-old daughter just started high school, and she chose metals as an elective, inspired by my journey. It’s a great feeling to know that my career has shown my kids that they have options for their futures.
Encouraging Others to Join
I would tell anyone considering a career change to look into Sheet Metal. It offers valuable skills that are always in demand, no matter where you live or what’s happening in the world. The training is free, the union provides excellent benefits, and the pay allows you to support your family while doing work you can be proud of.
Is It Fun? Absolutely!
I love what I do. Working with my hands, building things that will stand for decades, and knowing my work will be used by hundreds or even thousands of people, it’s incredibly rewarding. And it’s something I’m proud to tell my kids about at the end of the day.
